We get asked all the time if you need a licence to serve alcohol in Barber shops. The fact is you need 2 different licence’s. In the eyes of the council if you are giving it away free with the haircut, they would say that it is included in the price, so you are selling it. For instance if you charge £15 for the haircut and give out a bottle of beer, they see it as £11 being the haircut and £4 being the beer.  This also applies to Bridal shops, Nail and Beauty Salons etc.

Even if you don’t sell alcohol but have a one off event like a Bachelor party and they ask for alcohol to be available during their hair cut, you would need to use a temporary event notice (TEN).

The first licence you will need start with is a Personal Licence. You need a personal licence to become the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) on the Premises Licence. The DPS is the responsible person who authorises the sale of alcohol. It doesn’t mean they always have to be there but are still responsible when they are not present. The second licence you need is a Premises Licence, this has the conditions which you have to abide by. The conditions for example include the hours you are allow to sell alcohol and if people can take alcohol away with them when they leave. We can apply for both at the same time for you.
