What is covered in Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3?
- Roles and responsibilities of a first aider in the workplace. This includes understanding the legal requirements and duties of a first aider, as well as the importance of personal protection and effective communication during emergencies.
- Recognising and assessing potential hazards. Identifying common workplace hazards and assessing the risks they pose to individuals, ensuring a safe environment for both the casualties and the first aider.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Learning how to perform CPR on adults, including chest compressions and rescue breaths, to maintain circulation and oxygenation in a cardiac arrest situation.
- Dealing with unconscious casualties. Understanding how to assess and manage an unconscious casualty, including the recovery position and monitoring vital signs.
- Wounds, bleeding, and shock. Recognising different types of wounds, controlling bleeding through various techniques such as direct pressure and bandaging, and managing shock in a casualty,
- Fractures, sprains and strains. Identifying and providing initial first aid for common musculoskeletal injuries such as fractures, sprains, and strains.
- Choking. Recognising and responding to a choking casualty, including techniques such as abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre) to clear an obstructed airway.
- Minor injuries and burns. Treating minor injuries like cuts, grazes, burns, and scalds through proper cleaning, dressing and providing pain relief.
- Medical conditions and first aid. Understanding common medical conditions that may arise in the workplace, such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and asthma attacks, and providing appropriate first aid interventions.
- Recording and reporting incidents. Knowing the importance of accurately documenting incidents and injuries, as well as understanding the legal requirements for reporting workplace accidents and near misses.The Level 2 first aid course is taught through a combination of theory, practical demonstrations, and hands-on practice to ensure learners can respond to workplace emergencies effectively.
How long does First Aid Level 3 take?
To achieve a Level 3 First Aid certificate, learners should expect to undertake 3 days of learning, excluding breaks.
Assessment
At the end of the course learners are assessed through multiple choice questions.
Certification
The course is certified by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC). Certificates can be posted or downloaded as a PDF.
Further training
If you have a defibrillator in your workplace, we recommend HABC Level 2 Basic Life Support Certification and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.
